GUIDELINES ON HOW TO WRITE SIWES REPORTS

1.0              SIWES Report writing can be described as students order in an objective account of daily, weekly and monthly presentation of experience gathered during the period of attachment in the industry.  A good SIWES report therefore must obey certain principles of effective writing.  The report must feature some prominent qualities like clarity, brevity, accuracy simplicity and logically.  It must also possess good grammatical expression, lucidity, coherency and consistency.

1.1              HOW TO WRITE SIWES REPORT
It is necessary for the writer to prepare a simple outline arranged in manner that will guide the writer in an easy presentation of his/her finding(s) and conclusion.  Also it will give a vivid and accurate account of what actually transpired in the place of industrial attachment.

1.2       LANGUAGE
SIWES Report must be written in a language that will convey actual report to a layman and a neutral person who does not have any prior knowledge of the working system of the organization.  The information contained in the report must be clearly communicated in such a way that will be void of multiple interpretation or ambiguity.  This is because any report writing that lacks clarity of meaning is as good as not writing any report at all.
(i)          It must contain correct and accurate information it must be devoid of grammatical error.
(ii)               The report must be very precise and concise in presentation.
(iii)             The writer must have his/her mind concentrated on the subject matter
(iv)             Finally, the report is better written using the third person singular in its grammatical composition.

2.0       FORMAT OF A SIWES REPORT
This is a report that can be classified as formal report and it must contain the following parts:
(a)                Cover page
(b)                Title page
(c)                Certification
(d)               Acknowledgement
(e)                Table of content
(f)                 List of tables
(g)                List of figures
(h)                Appendices


2.0.1    COVER PAGE
This is the page where the title of the report, name of writer(s) with matriculation number, the name of the company where attachment was done, the department of the report writer, the period and the year of  attachment must be clearly stated.

2.0.2    TITLE PAGE
The title page indicates what a particular report is all about.  It shows all the identities that would facilitate easy access and identification of a report e.g.  the names of the writer, the title of the report, the period of the industrial attachment the purpose for which the report is submitted, and the month and year of submission of the report.

2.0.3    CERTIFICATION
This is the page that contains the statements that endorses author’s report as meeting the approved standard by the authority.  It must be endorsed by the Departmental coordinator.  Students should ensure that the certification page is signed at the point of submission.

2.0.4    ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
This is used to recognize or express appreciation for the effort support or cooperation of those who have contributed to the success of the report.

2.0.5    TABLE OF CONTENT
This has to do with the pagination of the whole report as regards showing the sequential arrangement of the facts or ideas in the report on different pages of the report.  It therefore enables readers know where to find items that really interest them in the report without going through the whole content.

2.0.6    LIST OF TABLE
Like the table of content, this shows the orderly arrangement of tables and the pages where it could be found.

2.0.7    LIST OF FIGURE
This also deals with pagination of figures as appeared in the whole report so as to aid the understanding of the report.

2.0.8    APPENDIX
These are explanatory and statistical supplementary materials or information at the end of a report which can aid better understanding of some aspects of the report.

2.0.9    SUMMARY
This is a brief analysis of the content of the report which normally comes at the beginning of a report to give readers insight into the content of the report, thereby, preparing the mind of readers and also aiding  easy-grasp and understanding of the report.

3.0       BODY OF THE REPORT
The body of the report discusses the main work done during the four-month SIWES industrial attachment.  It must be analyzed under various headings and subheadings to make it easy to read.

CHAPTER ONE
Introduction:  This must entail note about SIWES and brief description of the organization where SIWES was carried out with the staff structure of the organization (organogram)

CHAPTER TWO
Sectional activities and work done i.e. what the students learnt from their respective organizations.  In summary, the experience acquired during the SIWES period. Also, definition of logical terms in their various fields of study (some professional languages) used during the SIWES period.

CHAPTER THREE
This entails the input/contribution of the students to their respective organizations and the project(s) carried out during the SIWES period.

CHAPTER FOUR

SUMMARY, RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSION

NOTE
The Technical Report must be in the following format:
Paper:             A4
Font:               Times New Roman
Spacing:          Double Line
Font Size:       12 Point.
